How long have you played the saxophone?
I started playing the alto saxophone in 5th grade (because I was told it was the easiest instrument to start on) and I continued up until freshman year of high school. When I auditioned for Jazz Band in 8th grade, I was asked to switch to tenor. I fell in love with tenor and made it my main saxophone.
What ensembles have you been a part of?
I have been in concert band and jazz band all four years of high school. Outside of my main ensembles I have also participated in a cappella, pep band, pit band for the plays put on by our drama department, concert and jazz all-cape festivals, and the Brewster town band.
What's your favorite jazz band memory?
Our Sophomore year Swing Night would have to be my favorite memory. I performed my first ever solo in Embraceable You, a very big step for me. It was a bitter sweet moment however, because I had to say goodbye to many seniors, including my fellow tenor saxophone player, Ben Hoopes.
What have been your favorite songs from each year?
2016-2017: Backrow Politics by Gordon Goodwin
2017-2018: The Incredibles by Micheal Giancchino
2018-2019: Count Bubba by Gordon Goodwin
2019-2020: TBD
What inspired you to audition for jazz band?
As of eighth grade, I had never considered myself a very musical person and was not going to audition. However my older sister Emily who played trumpet in the jazz band told me about how much she loved it. I eventually figured, why not? and I decided to pick up the piece.
Anything else to share?
I have three rules when it comes to playing the saxophone.
Always play the cues unless Danthony tells you not to.
We are saxophones, we don't care.
The third always seems to change, however for jazz band I'll say, become a part of your instrument and feel the music that you play. Appreciate the opportunity you get to play in this ensemble. These people will become your family and this place will become your home.
